Exploring History through social media and student creation

5th grade students at Havens are learning about the America Revolution. Recently they have been studying the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. Trevor Szafranski has designed a new activity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and solidify their understanding of historic events. These “Creation Stations” will be reused for different historical events as he moves forward with his curriculum. The goal of the activity is “to apply and assess their knowledge and have them dig deeper in the subject matter in  a way that allows them to explore the minds of those involved in the historical events,” according to Trevor.

He began the activity with a brief review of the two events and what they have been learning. He questioned the class and led them in a discussion about the two events and outlined each activity station. He divided the students into 4 stations (detailed below) and had them complete the activities. The students were excited about the activities as they relate to their interests and allow them to move around the room.

This activity is a great example of how to blend technology into the classroom and create student centered activities that allow students to be creative and self directed. The students were engaged in the activity and were collaborating together to complete the tasks.
